Our mission is to get humanity off-world — not just astronauts on pioneering missions, but humanity, en masse. Rooted in Astronautic Humanism and inspired by the patronage system of the historical Renaissance, we connect philosophy, science, policy and the arts.
2008 — The idea is born
At the Belgirate convention “Colonizing the Moon and the Near Earth Asteroids for a New Renaissance”, the Space Renaissance concept is expressed for the first time.
2009 — The founding papers
The Space Renaissance Manifesto is approved online; an open letter goes to the G20 in London.
2010 — Incorporation in Torino, Italy
Space Renaissance International becomes a non-profit association with a worldwide membership.
2011 · 2016 — The first two World Congresses
SRIC1 and SRIC2 — “From Space Exploration to Space Settlement” — set the method: theses, papers, a binding Final Resolution.
2017 — Declaration and Academy
The Declaration of the Space Renaissance is approved; the Space Renaissance Academy opens its website.
2018 — At the United Nations
SRI takes part in UNISPACE+50 in Vienna; Space Renaissance Italia holds its national congress in Bologna.
2021 — SRIC3 and a new President
Twelve priority objectives adopted, including the 18th SDG; Bernard Foing is elected President.
2022 — Member of the IAF
The International Astronautical Federation recognizes SRI as a member at IAC 73 in Paris.
2023 — The 18th SDG goes to the UN
The proposal is announced at COPUOS 66; 65 space entities meet at UN Plaza 777 in New York.
2024 — Observer at UN COPUOS
Observer status granted at the 67th COPUOS session; side events at the Summit of the Future.
2025 — To space
The SR4All Gallery art–science payload flies on The Exploration Company’s Nyx capsule.
2026 — SRIC4 and a new mandate
“Quality of Life, on Earth and Beyond” closes; a new Board is elected and a five-year strategy begins.
SRI works for the establishment of an interplanetary society, with the long-term aspiration that humanity becomes an interstellar civilization.

Tsiolkovsky, Ehricke, O’Neill and others were the fathers of the philosophical current we call Astronautic Humanism. SRI is, first of all, a philosophical association: it asks what humanity’s expansion into space means, and whom it should serve.
We regard Gerard K. O’Neill’s model — large rotating habitats in orbit and at the Lagrange points — as the best living conditions for humans in space, and our Board includes a director for the O’Neill heritage.
Every five years the members meet in Congress, adopt a Final Resolution and elect the President and the Board.
